I am inspired by the mystical world view of Huichol Indian shamans and artists of Mexico. I have spent almost twenty years as an anthropologist studying the yarn paintings of the Huichol -- a fibre art of glowing colour and mythological subjects -- and participating in shamanic ceremonies. From them I have learned about a world where the land is alive and able to speak, and animal spirits are messengers between humans and gods.

I have combined this inspiration with my own love of the Gatineau Hills of Quebec. The series of wool tapestries entitled "Spirits of the Hills" depict shamanic visions of spirits of nature and animal allies emerging from the dramatic curves of the Gatineau Hills.

Tapestry is an ancient art made by weaving colored wool yarns together on an upright loom. Wool yarn has a glow and sheen that gives warmth and depth to the colours. Colors are mixed to create unique combinations that blend in the viewer's eye like an Impressionist painting. Every thread is placed and beaten by hand. The artist must keep the whole image in mind, even though the tapestry is built one weft at a time, from the bottom to the top.
